Refusal is a Finnish deathgrind band from Helsinki that was formed in 2008.

history

The band was founded in January 2008 by the bassist Tero Pirhonen and the guitarist Timo Pirhonen. The duo met drummer Aleksi Roitto and guitarist Sophie Collard through the Internet. The line-up was supplemented by a friend of Timo Pirhonen, Niikka Lius, who took over the vocals. In the same month the band began with the first rehearsals before the first concert was held on March 30th. In February, Collard announced that she would be leaving Finland for six months to live in France . A replacement was found in a friend of Tero Pirhonen's named Ville Karhi. This was followed by participation in a band competition and a small festival called Meat Grinder. At the end of May 2008, the first demo , Obey the Meat Grinder, was released , which contains five songs. In the following time, the position originally occupied by Sophie Collard continued to change frequently, but since 2013 the second electric guitar has been operated by Patrick Franck. In October 2015 the band signed a record deal with FDA Rekotz , which resulted in the release of their debut album We Rot Within in January 2016 .

style

Luxi Lahtinen from voicesfromthedarkside.de assigned the band to the Deathgrind in his review of Grasp . One can see in the demo particularly similarities to Napalm Death , whereby Refusal is less extreme. Overall, simple and common Deathgrind is offered, which also appeals to Death Metal fans. Rock Hard's Patrick Schmidt also noted a napalm death influence in his review of We Rot Within , but occasionally noted similarities with Slayer . There is something anarchistic and revolutionary about the sound , which makes parallels to Impaled Nazarene appear. The songs had a “ punky shit attitude” and would deal with raw “ riff ballers”. Matthias Salomon from bloodchamber.de stated in his review of the album straightforward Death Metal with Scandinavian production, which was enriched by a little Grindcore and a few Doom Metal elements. In the songs the band makes use of tempo changes, breaks and guitar solos . He drew a comparison to Napalm Death's Harmony Corruption and cited Obituary , Master , Pestilence and Putrid Pile as additional references. Fabian Schneider from Metal.de also reviewed the album and said that it offers “neat pounding Deathgrind, as it is in the textbook”, which is “full of high-speed riffs, nagging and successful guitar solos”. The group also occasionally fell into Doom Metal passages. The songs were marked by frequent changes of rhythm, screams and growls , which often act simultaneously and occasional hardcore - Shouts .
