Master is a death metal band originally from the USA ( Chicago ). However, the head of the band, Paul Speckmann , moved to the Czech Republic , from where he continues to do Masters with new members.

Band history

The band was founded in 1983 by Paul Speckmann and Bill Schmidt, who met during their joint activities in the doom metal band War Cry. Their shared passion for more extreme metal bands like Slayer or Venom prompted them to take this step. Master was one of the first death metal bands, took on a pioneering role together with Possessed , Death and Morbid Angel and is now considered a co-founder of the scene. However, it does not see itself as belonging to this category.

According to Speckmann, the band had a record deal with the Combat Records label back in 1985 , on which the recordings of the band Death were released, and they had already recorded an album in the studio. However, this was only released in 2003, almost 20 years later, via Displeased Records .

Then Master signed a record deal with the German label Nuclear Blast in 1990 after the label had signed Abomination , Paul Speckmann's side project.

With the first decline of Death Metal in the mid-1990s, Master also came to an early end. It was not until 1998 that you could get a record deal with Pavement again and continue working. System Shock took over sales for Europe.

In 1999 Paul Speckmann moved to the Czech Republic in order to be able to afford a life exclusively for his music thanks to the lower cost of living . Since then, Speckmann has continued to operate the band from there. In May 2007 the album Slaves to Society was released . Then the band went on tour across Europe for two months. In 2010 the album The Human Machine was released .

In 2013 the new album The New Elite was released, which should be released in 2012.

Song lyrics

The band's lyrics are very political and critical of society and America, which sets them apart from the violence and death-related lyrics of most other bands in the genre. This is particularly evident in the song America the Pitifull from the second album. The song plays the tune of the American national anthem, while the lyrics criticize the ruthless behavior of American industry, which, legitimized by the spirit of the Manifest Destiny , destroys the environment and exploits people. The title of the album Four More Years of Terror also has a political content and alludes to the second term of office of President George W. Bush .

meaning

The band is one of the first representatives of the death metal genre. Their importance is also evident in the cover versions of bands such as Napalm Death ( Master ) and Exhumed ( Pay to Die ).
