Reganochromis calliurus ( Syn .: Paratilapia calliura ) is an African cichlid species that is endemic to the East African Lake Tanganyika . It is the only species in the genus Reganochromis named in honor of the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan . The specific epithet calliurus is made up of the Greek words “callos” (= beauty, ornament) and “oura” (= tail).

features

Reganochromis calliurus has a very elongated, laterally flattened body and becomes 15 cm long. The head is small, the mouth pointed and slightly above due to the protruding lower jaw. It is relatively large, can be pushed forward far, is then tubular and has a diameter of 7 to 8 mm. Reganochromis calliurus is silvery with horizontal rows of very shiny, mother-of-pearl-colored scales and a lighter belly. The unpaired fins are transparent with a dark border. The rear section of the dorsal and anal fin and the caudal fin are striped yellow / black. The dorsal fin has 14 to 18 spines, the anal fin 3. The caudal fin is fan-shaped and indented. The outer rays of the pelvic fins are longer than the inner ones . There are 3 to 4 rows of small, conical teeth in the jaws, with the outer teeth being larger. The teeth on the pharyngealia are very narrow and slightly conical. The number of gill rakes is 13 to 15.

Way of life

Reganochromis calliurus lives on sandy soils near the shore in deeper areas at least to a depth of 60 meters. It feeds on all kinds of invertebrates, mainly shrimp, other small crustaceans and fry. The fish are mouth brooders in which males and females take turns in brood care (biparental). The up to 60 to 200 eggs per clutch are relatively large (⌀ 2 to 2.5 mm).
