Regent ( English Regent (Village) ) is a city in Sierra Leone . It is located in the Western Area Rural district about ten kilometers east of the capital Freetown .

Mayor since June 29, 2013 is John R. Benjamin.

history

Church and Mission Station (1850)

Regent was founded in 1812 by Christian missionaries from the Christian Missionariy Society . The place served freed slaves from Nova Scotia in what is now Canada as the first point of contact after arriving in Sierra Leone. Regent got his name from Charles MacCarthy (1764-1824). Previously it was known under the name Hog Brook ( German  for pigs brook ).

On August 14, 2017, after rains, there was a landslide that killed at least 1,100 people.

The place is mainly inhabited by Krios , Mende , Temne and Loko .

When it was founded in 1812, there were already more than 2000 freed slaves living in Regent.

Infrastructure

Regent has had an asphalt road connection to Freetown since the beginning of 2014.

With the Sanu Memorial School from 1912, Sierra Leone's first school is located in Regent. It was founded by John Randal .

Regent has a health facility with the Regent Community Health Center . With the St. Charles' Church is the oldest church in the country and the third oldest church building in Africa in Regent. This and the surrounding Kings Yard are a National Monument .
