The Reggiane Re. 2004 was an aircraft project from the Italian manufacturer Reggiane .
history
The history of the Reggiane fighter aircraft was marked by the lack of a suitable and available aero engine for the excellent airframe . Starting with the Reggiane Re.2000, a number of machines with radial and in-line engines up to the Reggiane Re.2005 were created . Parallel to the development of the Re.2005, an alternative should be available if the Fiat RA.1050 RC.58 Tifone engine planned there , a German DB605A-1 built under license , is not available or the model does not achieve the expected performance .
The development was named Re.2004 and should use the liquid-cooled Isotta Fraschini Zeta RC 25/60 engine. This was a 24-cylinder, turbocharged engine with an output of 1250 hp. The fuselage, wings and other components were identical to those of the Re.2005. In 1942 a prototype and 10 pre-series machines were ordered. The engine was tested in the three-engined Savoia-Marchetti SM.79 and Savoia-Marchetti SM.81 . Overheating problems arose here, which subsequently could never be completely overcome. In 1943 the order was canceled again. Another essential aspect here was the successfully completed development of Re.2005, so that an alternative was no longer necessary.
