The Reggiane Re.2008 was an Italian project for a single-seat fighter aircraft with jet engine .

history

The Re.2008 marked the end of a whole series of Reggiane fighter planes that were developed by the development team led by Roberto Longhi. Longhi initially developed fighter planes like the Reggiane Re.2000 , which were strongly influenced by his experience in the USA, but the further developments found highlights such as the Reggiane Re.2005 , which were at least equal to both Allied and German types around 1945. Consequently, the technology of the jet engine was also incorporated into his designs. The Reggiane Re.2007 was developed for the German Junkers Jumo 004 .

The follow-up story is controversial. There are construction plans and other documents about a further development for Re.2008. In particular, letters have been published which Longhi wrote to Gianni Caproni about this project. Conversely, there are suspicions that much of this has been falsified over the course of time, up to and including the denial of the existence of the Re.2008 project.

According to Longhi's documents, the hull of the Re.2007 was largely retained. The wings received a sweep of 33 ° with variable depth. The armament should consist of four 20 mm automatic cannons. Performance data were calculated for an engine with 2270 kp.

The project is said to have been discontinued due to doubts about its financial feasibility.
