Autograph of the Gmünder Chronik by Paul Goldstainer

Paul Goldstainer (* 16th century in Ellwangen , † 1590 in Schwäbisch Gmünd ) was councilor, mayor and chronicler of Schwäbisch Gmünd.

Life

Goldstainer studied in Tübingen , where he matriculated in 1521. He later settled in Gmünd and became a cloth merchant. As mayor he wrote the so-called Gmünder Chronik around 1549/1550 . It is the “oldest historical work preserved in its original form” in the city. The transcript is in the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel .

In 1583 Goldstainer was elected mayor for life. Goldstainer was married to Apollonia Debler, the sister of the mayor of Gmünd Caspar Debler. The marriage remained childless. Michael Dörleder from Dinkelsbühl challenged his will before the Gmündens City Court and the Imperial Court of Justice in Speyer .
