The Re. 2006 Sagittario II (Rifleman) was a fighter aircraft made by the Italian manufacturer Reggiane .

history

The Re. 2006 was a further development of the Reggiane Re. 2005 with a 1750 hp 12-cylinder Daimler-Benz DB 603 . Corresponding to the Fiat G.56 and Macchi MC.206 , it was a further development and adaptation of Series 5 fighters to the powerful German engine DB 603 for Series 6 . While the Macchi MC.206 remained just a draft and was destroyed in a bombing raid shortly before completion, the Fiat G.56 and the Re.2006 were built, although the Re.2006 never flew.

The Re. 2006 was designed in 1943. Just in time for the bombing of the Reggiane works in Reggio nell'Emilia , the development team was able to flee to Correggio together with some finished components and were housed incognito in a high school. They completed the construction of the prototype and also prevented its destruction by partisans. The team decided not to hand over the prototype to the German Air Force; therefore it was kept secret and no information was leaked to the public. Later it was handed over to the Allies, but they were never flown. In 1946 the Allied Aviation Commission demanded that the prototype be scrapped. At the request of some lecturers, the Milan Polytechnic University received the aircraft for a few years, but without an engine and with sawed-up wings.

construction

The biggest external difference to the base Re.2005 was the trunk, which was almost a meter longer, with which the center of gravity was balanced. The Fiat G.56 was modified similarly, but to a slightly lesser extent. The control surfaces were essentially retained, except for the tail unit, which was enlarged to compensate for the longer fuselage. The chassis was strengthened in order to remedy the problem of the too weak chassis known from the Re.2005. The landing gear is the only remaining part and can be seen in the Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia in Milan .

Other designs

There were a number of designs called Re.2006, but not all of them really had anything to do with this one. It is not clear what stages these drafts were in. Furthermore, sources about the Re.2007 speak of the Re.2006 as another project with a jet engine . The deliberate concealment of the 1944/45 project is the cause of misleading sources and certainly also some rumors.

  • Re.2006b: A version of the Re.2006 was constructed with integral tanks in the wings, coolers on the inner wing leading edge and a 4-blade propeller. It is not known whether the built prototype of the Re.2006 corresponded to the original design or this version.
  • Re.2006P: Airmail plane with a liquid-cooled radial motor. Planned for post-war service.
  • Re.2006PP: Airmail and passenger aircraft like Re.2006P with a larger fuselage
  • Re.2006C or Re.2006 Racer: planned racing machine for the Bendix Trophy .
