Regin Dahl

Regin Dahl (born November 5, 1918 in Tórshavn , Faroe Islands , † March 29, 2007 in Copenhagen ) was one of the most important Faroese poets and composers.

Dahl was born in the Sandagerði rectory in Tórshavn. His father was the provost Jákup Dahl , his mother Maria, née Hansen (1878–1944). He had three daughters of his own. One of his three older siblings was the Faroese historian and archaeologist Sverri Dahl (1910-1987).

At the age of 15 Dahl went to Denmark, where he graduated from high school in 1937. He lived only briefly in the Faroe Islands, but was often with exiled Faroes in Denmark and always wrote in Faroese . In addition to his own poems, he also wrote the music for the works of other poets, primarily Hans Andrias Djurhuus . There are around 400 compositions on tapes.

Dahl worked as an editor for the renowned Danish publisher Gyldendal and was also responsible for the publication of Danish poets. Blinded in old age, he last lived in a home for the blind in Haderslev .

Dahl was honored twice with the Faroe Islands Literature Prize in 1973 and 1979 . In 1985 he became the first Faroese for the collection of poems Eftirtorv nFor Nordic Council's Literature Prize nominations, he but not received. Furthermore, in 1998 he was the first recipient of the Mentanarvirðisløn Landsins , the Faroe Islands national cultural award .

In 2018 the Post of the Faroe Islands issued a special stamp for Dahl's 100th birthday.
