Reginald "Reggie" Earnshaw (born February 5, 1927 in Dewsbury , West Yorkshire , † July 6, 1941 aboard the merchant ship North Devon off the coast of Norfolk ) is probably the youngest person to be killed in the British armed forces during World War II .
Life
Earnshaw left his childhood home in Granton, near Edinburgh , Scotland, at the age of 14 and joined the Merchant Navy in February 1941. He gave 1926 as the year of birth in order to meet the requirements for the minimum age for conscription of 15 years of age. On the ship SS North Devon he worked as a "galley boy" (cabin boy). This was shot at by German aircraft on July 6, 1941. Earnshaw died in the attack. His body was buried in an unnamed grave in Comely Bank Cemetery in Edinburgh. The by one of his comrades with a nationwide appeal sought and discovered with the help of Earnshaw's sister grave was in 2009 by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission , the War Graves Commission of the Commonwealth , marked with a grave stone granite.
