Szczepan Wesoły

Szczepan Wesoły (born October 16, 1926 in Katowice ; † August 28, 2018 in Rome ) was a Polish clergyman and Roman Catholic auxiliary bishop in Gniezno .

Life

Szczepan Wesoły was drafted into the German Wehrmacht as a youth at the beginning of the Second World War, first on the Western Front, later as a radio operator in Algeria and Italy.

After the end of the war, he began training at the Pontifical Gregorian University. The Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Religious , Valerio Valeri , ordained him as a priest on September 18, 1949 . He was active in the pastoral care of Polish immigrants in Italy. From 1962 to 1965 he headed the Slavic department of the press office of the Secretariat of the Second Vatican Council. In 1967 he became head of the Central Immigration Pastoral Center in Rome.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on December 11, 1968 auxiliary bishop in Gniezno and titular bishop of Dragonara . The Archbishop of Gniezno and Warsaw , Stefan Cardinal Wyszynski , donated him episcopal ordination on February 7, 1969 in his private chapel ; Co- consecrators were Herbert Bednorz , auxiliary bishop in Katowice , and Władysław Rubin , general secretary of the Synod of Bishops .

Until 1980 he worked for Władysław Cardinal Rubin , the representative of the Primate of Poland for the pastoral care of Polish emigrants. On February 7, 1994 he was appointed titular archbishop pro hac vice of Dragonara by Pope John Paul II and was himself appointed the primate of Poland's representative for the pastoral care of Polish emigrants. On April 8, 2003, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation; he lived in Rome until death.

He was an honorary citizen of Katowice and was awarded the Grand Cross of the Polonia Restituta order . On May 5, 2018, Szczepan Wesoły was awarded the Order of the White Eagle , the highest Polish distinction, bhb " by the President of the Republic of Poland , Andrzej Duda , " in recognition of his outstanding services for promoting the Polish and patriotic attitudes of Polish emigrants in the World, for pastoral work and for the union of generations in the spirit of Christian values ​​".
