Regius Professor of Surgery (Aberdeen)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Regius Professor of Surgery is a Regius Professor of Surgery at the University of Aberdeen , founded in 1839 by Queen Victoria . The foundation was launched shortly before King's College and Marischal College were merged to form the University of Aberdeen , to alleviate the problems caused by the competing colleges.

History of the professorship

In 1497, King's College, founded by Bishop William Elphinstone in 1495, became the first school in the English-speaking world to teach medicine . In 1593, the Fourth Earl Marischal, George Keith , founded a college named after him.

In 1826 the future Prime Minister Robert Peel appointed a commission to investigate all Scottish universities, although the reason was primarily the complaint of the Edinburgh colleges about the interference of the city council. This commission recommended the unification of the colleges in Aberdeen into one university . However, the employment of Parliament resulted in this proposal being ignored for over 30 years. At the same time, however, the proposals of the commission and the half-hearted implementation created tensions between the colleges that were competing in various subjects.

One of the main advantages that the commission foresaw for the university was the creation of a common school of medicine. Such a joint faculty was established, but in 1839 it broke up due to jealousy between King's and Marschial College. Six months later the Krone intervened and re-established the joint school through the foundation of the Regius Professorship for Surgery and the occupation with William Pirrie from Marschial College. In 1860 the colleges were merged and the University of Aberdeen was established as an institution.
