Reichardia picroides is a species of Reichardia in the sunflower family (Asteraceae). In German the species is also called bitter Reichardie . The generic name Reichardia honors Johann Jacob Reichard (1743–1782), a German doctor and botanist.

Reichardia picroides is a perennial stem hemicryptophyte that reaches heights of 10 to 45 centimeters. The rhizome is woody and thickened. The branching and leaf shape of the species are very variable. The outermost bracts measure 3 to 5 × 1.5 to 2.5 millimeters. The edge of the skin is up to 0.5 millimeters wide. The cup stalks have scale-shaped bracts. The outer bracts of the flower head are egg-shaped, pointed and provided with a 0.3-0.5 millimeter wide skin margin.

The flowering period extends from January to December.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14.

Occurrence

Reichardia picroides occurs in the Mediterranean area. You can find them in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Portugal, Spain, Gibraltar, on the Balearic Islands, France, Monaco, Italy, Sardinia, Sicily and Corsica, Slovenia, Croatia, on the Balkan Peninsula, in Bulgaria, Crete, in the Aegean Sea, Cyprus, European and Asian Turkey, Syria and Lebanon. The species grows on sandy and rocky coasts, on dry wasteland and on ruderal sites. In Crete it can be found at altitudes from 0 to 1100 meters.
