history

Former headquarters of Reichelt, 2006

Reichelt was founded in 1903 by Otto Reichelt. As Kaffee Reichelt , changed to GmbH in 1950 and converted to AG in 1991, the company was based in Berlin-Marienfelde .

From the 1950s at the latest, the company was owned by the Dutch industrialist family de Gruyter. The company expanded its business operations in the 1950s by setting up its own branches and by taking over other branches, such as Otto Thürmann GmbH. In 1960 the production of meat and sausage products was started. After the Wall was built, the company was essentially limited to West Berlin . A bakery production facility has also been part of the group of companies since 1972.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Reichelt slowly expanded into East Berlin and Brandenburg . With the succession of generations of the de Gruyter family, Ludovicus de Gruyter took over the management of the GmbH. As a result, expansion was driven by the opening of new branches in Berlin and Brandenburg. To finance this growth, the GmbH was converted into an AG and the shares were listed on the stock exchange in 1991. There was strong growth that did not always make sense from a business perspective. In addition, there was a change in strategy - Otto Reichelt AG (actually located in the upper market segment) began to compete with Aldi in terms of price for everyday goods with its own products. H. To undercut Aldi. This strategy did not work, in 1995 the de Gruyter family gave their remaining stake (60%) to Edeka Minden-Hannover e. Gave.

The previous production areas of sausage and baked goods were spun off into independent companies. The bakery production was brought into the Otto Thürmann GmbH. The branches were divided into A (high quality) and B (poorly stocked) branches. But even the restructuring under the Edeka leadership did not bring Otto Reichelt AG back into profitability in the long term.

In 2002, the remaining shareholders were squeezed out and the stock corporation was converted back into a GmbH after 11 years. Otto Thürmann GmbH was merged with Schäfers Brot- und Kuchenspezialitäten GmbH within the Edeka Minden-Hannover Group in 2005 and has not existed since then. The company's own central warehouse in Berlin-Marienfelde was abandoned. The branches were now supplied from the Edeka warehouse in Grünheide (Mark) . The administration also moved to Grünheide. In Berlin-Marienfelde there was the meat factory, which in addition to the Reichelt branches also supplied other shops in the Edeka group.

As of 2010, the Reichelt stores, as usual at Edeka, were predominantly run by sole proprietorships .

By resolution of the shareholders' meeting in December 2013, the company headquarters was relocated from Berlin to Grünheide (Mark) in Brandenburg in February 2014.

At the end of December 2016 it was announced that the name Reichelt would be given up for the branches and that it was planned to convert the stores to Edeka locations by the beginning of February 2017. The name was changed on January 29, 2017, and all Reichelt stores have since presented themselves as Edeka stores.

Corporate policy

Reichelt branch, Hildburghauser Strasse, 2006

Reichelt always played a pioneering role in the food trade. The company opened its first self-service shop in 1955 , and shortly afterwards began selling fresh fruit and vegetables. In 1960 fresh meat counters followed, which were supplied by the company's own meat factory. The sales areas of the branches have also been continuously enlarged. In 1962 stores with more than 1000 m² were opened for the first time, in 1972 there was the first large-scale market with 2000 m².

Since the takeover by Edeka, Reichelt has concentrated on the larger branches with more than 800 m² sales area. Reichelt's branch network shrank from 86 to 53 stores, also due to the concentration on Berlin and the surrounding area. Most of the discontinued businesses were continued as Edeka stores. The own shops have been completely modernized. The consolidation phase after the takeover by Edeka was considered to be completed in 2005. Reichelt now wanted to expand again. Starting in 2006, around six new stores should be opened each year.

In 2007, 55 stores with around 68,500 m² of sales area and their own meat factory were operated under the Reichelt brand. On August 6, 2007, Berlin's first 24-hour supermarket with 17,000 m² and 20,000 items was opened in the Wilmersdorf district. From the beginning it was open from Monday 8:00 a.m. to Saturday 11:00 p.m.
