The Reichenow amaranth ( Lagonosticta umbrinodorsalis ) is an African species from the finch family . No subspecies are distinguished for these species. It shows similarities with the rock amaranth , which was only described in 1998 , but has a brown back color than this.

description

The Reichenow amaranth reaches a body length of ten to eleven centimeters. The male has a brownish gray crown and neck. The back and the upper wing covers are brownish red. The trunk and the upper tail-coverts are red. The tail feathers are lined with red. The cheeks, sides of the head and the chest are dark red, the under tail covers and the lower middle of the abdomen are black. The beak is slate gray. The females are similar to the males, but they are paler overall and have gray under tail-coverts.

Distribution and way of life

The distribution area of ​​the Reichenow-Amarant is the north of Cameroon and the border region between the south of Chad and the Central African Republic . The habitat is open, rocky terrain with patches of grass, bushes and individual groups of trees. Typical plants in its habitat are detarium , star bushes , terminalia , annona , pterocarpus and ficus . Another characteristic of its habitat is a clear difference between the seasons. The food consists of small grass seeds. There is no information about his other behavior.
