After the Second World War, Reif was one of the first manufacturers of racing cars in what was then the Soviet occupation zone , later the GDR .

history

Before the war, Erich Reif, born in 1900, owned the BMW dealership in Chemnitz . With the support of staff from the BMW plant in Eisenach he could in his business immediately after the war, a small number of competitive vehicles based on the BMW 328 produce, due to their construction, both sports cars -race and in the Formula 2 could be used . Erich Koch, the test engineer at the Eisenach plant, took care of the hairdressing of the engines, while the bodies were made by chief engineer Georg Hufnagel.

One of the cars was given to the West Berlin racing driver Helmut Niedermayr , who - meanwhile with a Veritas Meteor engine under the hood - triggered the greatest catastrophe in German motorsport history with at least 13 dead and 42 injured in an accident on the Grenzlandring in 1952 .

Another racing car was built in 1950 for Rudolf "Rudi" Krause , who started with it in the 1952 German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring , a race for the automobile world championship , but had to give up the race prematurely.

In the course of socialization in the GDR, the company Reif KG later had to be converted into a production cooperative of the handicrafts ( PGH ), with Erich Reif was elected chairman. He died in 1975.
