The Reindeer Lake (English for " reindeer is -See") with 5,658 km² one of the largest lakes of Canada .

location

It extends 400 km southwest of Hudson Bay over the provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan , the latter having the significantly larger share. The lake is surrounded by many small lakes, from which it is very difficult to distinguish itself. It is around 230 km long from north to south and around 60 km wide in the center.

The reindeer lake flows in the south over the Reindeer River into the Churchill River , which in turn finally flows into the Hudson Bay. Places on the bank are Brochet in the northeast, Kinoosao on the east bank and Southend near the southern end of the lake. The Malcolm Island airfield is also located 20 km southwest of Kinoosao on the small island of Hydichuk Island .

Flow regulation

In order to ensure year-round operation of the Iceland Falls hydropower station on the Churchill River, built between 1928 and 1933, even with a low natural inflow, Reindeer Lake was selected as a water reservoir. In 1942, a weir was built 5 km below what was then the lower end of the lake at the Whitesand Rapids , which has since regulated the lake's runoff. The Whitesand Dam ( 56 ° 14 ′ 3.5 ″  N , 103 ° 8 ′ 51.2 ″  W ) dams the lake by about 2 meters. When the water level is full, the lake water level is 336.68 m. The average water depth is 17 m. The total storage space is given as 17,900 million m³. The catchment area covers 62,600 km². The mean discharge is 320 m³ / s. The Encyclopaedia Britannica gives the water surface with 6,650 km²; this is the gross area with islands.

Deep Bay

The nearly circular Deep Bay near the southern end of the lake at 56 ° 24 ′ 18 ″  N , 102 ° 59 ′ 19 ″  W is an impact crater 13 km in diameter and an estimated age of approximately 99 million years. The maximum water depth is 219 m.
