The pure gray dust owl ( Caradrina gilva , syn .: Eremodrina gilva ), sometimes also referred to as pale silky-gloss owl, is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae).

The wingspan of the moth is 29 to 35 millimeters. They have relatively short and wide forewings, the upper side of which shows a bluish-gray, ash-gray or white-gray basic color. Apart from the transverse lines, hardly any other drawing elements stand out. Even the transverse lines are sometimes very indistinct and weak. The upper side of the hind wing is gray-white in color, somewhat darkened towards the edge and contains a weakly developed discoidal spot .

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are zeichnungslos, have a glassy light gray thin to erdgraue color and are with some, provided whitish hair bristles. The spiracles are black.

Doll

The doll is shiny red-brown in color. There are four fine bristles on the cremaster .

Similar species

Caradrina ibeasi shows an overall paler appearance, but the drawing is somewhat more contrasting. In the basic color, beige-gray tones predominate.

distribution and habitat

The pure gray dust owl is mostly found locally in southern Central Europe, but is absent on the Iberian Peninsula . Individual finds in other regions indicate that the species occasionally migrates . The eastern distribution extends to the Middle East. In the mountains it reaches heights of around 1600 meters. The main habitat of the species is warm, rocky mountain slopes, occasionally grassy areas.

Way of life

The nocturnal moths form one generation per year and can be found from June to October. You are flying towards artificial light sources . Low-growing herbs are given as food plants for the caterpillars. The caterpillars overwinter.

Danger

The pure gray dust owl occurs in the German federal states of Bavaria and Hesse . There are also individual finds from other German and Austrian federal states. The species seems to be in an area expansion. Although evidence is increasing in Baden-Württemberg , the degree of risk there is considered to be "unclear" before long-term experience is available.
