Life

Mayor election 1982

After Hanke was defeated in the election of Mayor of Ellwangen in December 1981 , the SPD brought him to Schorndorf as a candidate for the mayor's office in 1982, where he was elected for eight years in the second ballot with 48% of the votes, and his predecessor Rudolf Bayler ( CDU ), who had not started after twenty years in office.

Political goals

Hanke put his emphasis in the field of culture. He sponsored the literary and fairy tale days as well as the culture forum with the sculpture symposium. Some of his projects were controversial among the population.

During his tenure, a new community hall was built in the Oberberken district. Likewise, the bypass road, which was hotly debated in public, was built through the construction of federal highway 29 , which was also known as the "slope route".

In 1991, after his term of office, the town partnership he sponsored was entered into with the Thuringian community of Kahla . Hanke received the Medal of Honor from Kahla for his commitment.

Election of mayor in 1990

In 1990, Hanke initially decided not to campaign. As a result, Hanke achieved 35% and the civil rights activist Helmut Palmer 14% and the Remshalden mayor Winfried Kübler (CDU) 45%. Hanke went into the election campaign and Palmer withdrew his candidacy in favor of Hanke, so that he could win 42% of the vote. Kübler replaced Hanke with 57% of the vote and was supported by the CDU, the Free Voters and the FDP .
