The Saber was developed together with the Israeli automobile manufacturer Autocars Company Ltd. developed. The first copies, two-door convertibles, appeared in 1961 with four-cylinder in-line engines from the Ford Consul with a displacement of 1,703 cc. They had rear-wheel drive, front disc brakes, rack-and-pinion steering and fully synchronized transmissions from ZF. The front wheels were suspended on pushed swing arms (trailing arms). The engine made 57–73 bhp (42–54 kW) and the top speed was at least 145 km / h. The bodies were originally based on those of the Ashley 1172 , for which Reliant bought the rights. Coupes were introduced in June 1962; a total of 208 cars of this type were produced.

In 1962, a Reliant Saber Six with a six-cylinder in-line engine from Ford with 2,553 cc displacement and an output of 98 bhp (73 kW) was introduced, which brought the car to 177 km / h and took it from 0 to 100 in 12.2 seconds km / h accelerated. The front end of the Saber Six was different from that of the original Saber, but the first 17 Saber Six had the suspension from the Triumph TR4 with double wishbones at the front and leaf-sprung rigid axles at the rear. A total of 77 Saber Six were built, including 75 coupés and 2 convertibles.
