René Edmond Sergent (born January 16, 1904 in Paris , † June 30, 1984 ibid) was a French economist , diplomat and politician .

biography

After attending the Lycée Janson de Sailly , the son of a banker studied at the École polytechnique in Palaiseau . He then began his professional career in the Ministry of Finance in 1929 , before he was a senior employee of the finance department of the National Society for Aircraft Design between 1937 and 1940.

In 1940 he returned to the Ministry of Finance, where he worked until 1944 and was most recently director of the department for foreign trade . In 1945 he was appointed chairman of the French economic and finance delegation to the Allied Control Council in Berlin . In December 1947, he was appointed Finance Attaché at the Embassy in the United Kingdom .

Between April 1952 and 1955 he was NATO's first deputy general secretary . In April 1955 he finally succeeded Robert Marjolin as Secretary General of the OEEC . He held this office until he was replaced by Thorkil Kristensen on September 1, 1960.
