life and work

René Guido Verbraeken attended the Norwegian Business School in Bergen and graduated in 1950. He went to France, studied art history at the Sorbonne and was head of the Norwegian department at the Lycée Corneille in Rouen from 1957 to 1959 . In 1959 he received his doctorate in art history with a thesis on Dutch landscape painting of the 17th century at the Sorbonne ( Doctorat d'Université ). Then he was a lecturer in Norwegian at Caen University .

From 1963 Verbraeken was a lecturer in French at the Bergen Commercial College, where he had studied, and from 1978 until his retirement in 1997 he was a professor there. In his research he combined art history and French language history (especially in the form of word history), which gave him a kind of unique selling point. As an artist (painter) he created numerous works that were the subject of exhibitions dedicated to him (especially in Norway). In 1996 he was awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of the Arts and Literature).
