The Renard Islands are a group of islands in the Solomon Sea . Politically, they belong to the Milne Bay province in the southeastern area of Papua New Guinea .

Renard Islands are located in the north of Louisiade archipelago is 21 km north of the barrier reef of Vanatinai and 19 km southeast of Misima , the small Manuga Reef is located 19 km southeast of Renard Islands.

The Renard Islands are located on a 21 km by 6 km sandbar with an approximately rectangular floor plan. The largest islands in the group are Kimuta (286 ha ), Niva Beno (49 ha) and Oreia (47 ha). The Kimuta is 5.9 km long, with widths from 400 m to over 700 meters. The slightly hilly island rises up to 80 m above sea level. The islands of Niva Beno and Topuna are east of Kimuta. Bagaium (Bagai Um) is a tiny island (less than one hectare in size) off Kimuta to the southwest. On the northwest side of the bank are several reefs including the islands of Baiwa (17 ha), Pana Wadai (1 ha) and Pana Roran (6 ha). On the southeast side of the sandbank are the islands of Oreia and Epoko (4 ha), 5.5 km and 13 km southeast of Kimuta. Both islands are located in the center of small reef-fringed lagoons .

According to the 2000 census, the archipelago had 471 inhabitants, who are spread across two villages on the main island of Kimuta:

  • Awa (263, in the east)
  • Atuatua (208, to the west)
