Renate Sautermeister became famous in the 1970s with meticulously painted pictures of surreal spaces and landscapes. In the 1980s her work became more abstract. Strong colors have dominated her pictures since the mid-1990s. Echoes of representational and spatiality are always recognizable. In addition to painting, Renate Sautermeister has created numerous etchings, lithographs and drawings. So in the years 2000–2006 a kind of drawn diary was created with the series “Tageintagaus”.
In 2007, in her photo series “Das Fenster”, she documented the year-long view of a laundry-hung window in her neighborhood. The photos were originally intended as inspiration for her painterly work, but then developed into a cycle of its own that was presented in several exhibitions and published in a book. Since 1966, her work has been shown in over 150 exhibitions at home and abroad.
For her work, she was awarded the “Young Art in Hessen” prize from the Marielies-Hess Foundation (1974) and the “Reinhold Kurth Art Prize for the Oeuvre” from the Stadtsparkasse Frankfurt (1980). She was a member of the Darmstadt Secession since 1980 . From 1980 to 1996 she was a member of the board of the Frankfurter Kunstverein.
She received a teaching position at the Hochschule für Gestaltung, Offenbach and was a school artist at the Heinrich Kraft School in Frankfurt. In the eighties she designed sets for Bodo Kirchhoff “Bodybuilding” at the Schauspiel Frankfurt; on John Hopkins "This Story of You" in the Kammerspiel Frankfurt and on Pierre Byland "Autour d'une Porte" at the Theater am Turm Frankfurt and Center Pompidou Paris.
Hilmar Hoffmann , the former head of the Frankfurt cultural affairs department , dedicated a chapter to her in his book “Frankfurt's Strong Women”.
