Renato Calapso

Renato Calapso (born June 11, 1901 in Palermo , † November 17, 1976 in Messina ) was an Italian mathematician.

Calapso was the son of the mathematician Pasquale Calapso and received his Laurea in mathematics at the University of Messina in 1922 at his father's chair. He then worked as an analysis assistant in Messina and completed his habilitation (with Mauro Picone , Salvatore Pincherle , Giuseppe Peano ). In 1935 he won the competition for the chair of geometry in Messina, where he stayed until his retirement in 1976. From 1936 he was dean of mathematics and natural sciences in Messina for over two decades.

Like his father, he dealt with differential geometry and later with non-Euclidean geometry.

He was president of the cultural association Città di Siracusa , which he founded to organize an Archimedes celebration.
