René Bernards (born January 4, 1953 in Bussum ) is a Dutch cancer researcher.

Bernards studied medicine and biology at the University of Amsterdam from 1972 with a degree in medical biology in 1980 and received his doctorate in 1984 under Alex van der Eb at the University of Leiden (Transformation and oncogenicity by human adenoviruses). As a post-doctoral student , he was at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research at MIT with Robert Allan Weinberg from 1985 to 1988 . From 1988 to 1994 he was an assistant professor at Harvard University . From 1992 he was head of the department of molecular carcinogenesis at the Dutch Cancer Research Center in Amsterdam and from 1994 professor for molecular carcinogenesis at the University of Utrecht .

He developed new techniques in cancer diagnosis and treatment. For example, he developed a DNA micro-array technique to predict the malignancy (ability to metastasize) of breast cancer from the gene expression pattern. He also developed a method of blocking gene expression with RNA interference with application to cancer treatment.

In 2005 he received the Spinoza Prize . He is a member of EMBO , the Academia Europaea , the American Association for the Advancement of Science , the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences , the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences . In 2004 he received the Josephine Nefkens Prize for Cancer Research.

In 2003 he founded the biotechnology company Agendia.
