René van Helsdingen (born February 25, 1957 in Jakarta ) is a Dutch jazz pianist .

Live and act

Van Helsdingen, who grew up in Indonesia, received classical piano lessons there, but soon turned to improvisation and, under the influence of Oscar Peterson, to jazz. In 1974 he performed at the Dutch Jazz Singer Festival , in 1975 in Delft . In 1977 he began studying mining at the TU Delft , but also performed with his own group. In 1978 his debut album was released. From 1979 to 1981 he lived in Southern California, where he performed with musicians such as Charles Owens, Leroy Vinnegar , Obie Jessie and Billy Hart . In 1981 and 1982 he toured Europe with Peter Guidi , Essiet Okon Essiet and Don Mumford . In the next few years he worked with drummer Egbert van Gruythuyzen, but also with his future wife, the violinist Luluk Purwanto , whom he married in 1987. In 1989 the two performed with the Metropole Orkest . In 1990 he organized a superband with Billy Cobham , Wolfgang Schmid , Luluk Purwanto, Steven Kelly, Deborah Robinson, Shana and Nippy Noya , which toured the Netherlands as well as Indonesia. On further tours in Europe, Australia and Indonesia he played with his wife and trio at many big festivals.
