Peter Guidi

Peter Guidi (born September 14, 1949 in Glasgow as Piero Francesco Guidi ; † April 17, 2018 in Amsterdam ) was a British-Italian jazz musician ( alto and soprano saxophone , flute , alto and bass flute ), who was the founder and director of the Dutch Big bands worked to educate young people.

Live and act

Guidi, who grew up on the Channel Island of Jersey as the son of Italian parents , is a self-taught musician . He began a career as a musician in Italy; there he played in the groups of Tullio De Piscopo and Guido Manusardi and performed at Umbria Jazz , Pescara Jazz , but also the Jazz Jamboree . He was also one of René van Helsdingen's bands . He settled in Amsterdam in the mid-1980s. He pursued a career as a flautist and performed at festivals such as the North Sea Jazz Festival with his quartet. In 1988 he founded the jazz department at the Muziekschool Amsterdam , which he directed. In bands such as the Jazz Kidz, Jazz Juniors, Jazz Generation, Jazz Focus Big Band and the Jazz Mania Big Band , he brought children and young people closer to jazz. He also founded the Junior Jazz College as a joint institution of the Muziekschool Amsterdam and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam . In 2008 he was one of the founders of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of the Netherlands (NJJO). Guidi died after a short illness of the consequences of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease .

Prizes and awards

The bands founded by Guidi have won a total of 84 awards since 1988. He received the Holland Jazz Feel Good Award in 2004 for promoting jazz music in the Netherlands. In 2010 he was awarded the Order of Orange-Nassau in the knightly class for his jazz-educational work in the Netherlands .
