Don Mumford
Don Mumford (* 9. February 1954 in Lawrence (Kansas) as Donald Dean Mumford ; † 6. July 2007 in Des Moines , Iowa ) was an American jazz - drummer and percussionist .
Live and act
Don Mumford was best known for his collaboration with the pianist Abdullah Ibrahim . He was previously active in the Portland (Oregon) music scene . His mentors included Mel Brown and Jim Pepper . Before leaving Oregon, he played there with various formations such as Red Beans and Rice and Carl Smith's Natural Gas Company . In the 1980s he went on numerous African and European tours with Abdullah Ibrahim and Essiet Okon Essiet and took part in their Enja album Zimbabwe (1984); he also worked with Sun Ra , with whom he performed in Athens in 1984 ( Live at Praxis '84 ). In the same year he worked on Archie Shepp and Jeanne Lee's album African Moods . Mumford died of a bicycle accident in Des Moines , Iowa, aged 53 .
