Robert Rental , real name Robert Donnachie (* 1952 in Port Glasgow ; † 2000 ), was a pioneer of the post-punk era, DIY and the industrial electro pop scene in Great Britain .

Life

Together with Thomas Leer , he came to southern England from Port Glasgow in the late 1970s, where he became part of the local music scene. He did not publish most of his solo titles. Together with Leer he brought out exactly one album called The Bridge ( Industrial Records , 1979). In their work they were supported by books by James Graham Ballard and William S. Burroughs , among others , the latter also published his experiments with noise music on Industrial Records.

In 2000 he died of lung cancer .

When they got to London they found the punk scene to be dying out. They quickly formed a band. So they chose the route into the more electronic post-punk, for which groups like Clock DVA , Cabaret Voltaire and Suicide would later become known. They had different ideas about the design of their album The Bridge . While Leer wanted to concentrate more on the accompanying, while Rental preferred more conventional structures. The album is influenced by Krautrock , Brian Eno and Syd Barrett . Monochrome Day is the most traditional song on the album and, along with Connotations, is a key work.

A demo called MENTAL DETENTIONS , an instrumental and representative of early industrial pop , also dates from this time . Rental then worked with The Normal , creating a live album. His last work was the Double Heart / On Location single on Mute together with DAF member Robert Görl as drummer and Leer at the piano. He died soon after.
