The Republic of Zakopane ( Polish: Rzeczpospolita Zakopiańska ) was a short-lived Polish city-state with the capital Zakopane , which emerged at the end of the First World War at the foot of the Tatra Mountains .

On October 13, 1918, the mayor Wincenty Regieć summoned the council of Zakopane. The approx. 500 representatives elected Stefan Żeromski as their president as well as Władysław Zamoyski , Wincenty Szymborski and Mariusz Zaruski to the government council. The representation made the decision to proclaim the Republic of Zakopane, which should join a future Polish state.
After the Liquidation Commission was founded in Krakow on October 28, 1918 , the Republic of Zakopane declared itself independent of Austria-Hungary and units of the k. u. k. Monarchy were disarmed by the citizens of Zakopane. On November 16, 1918, the Republic of Zakopane declared itself dissolved and joined the Second Polish Republic , which was founded on November 11, 1918 .
