Requiem (Rutter)
The Requiem by John Rutter is a composition for soprano - solo , mixed choir and small orchestra or organ with an instrumental ensemble.
The Requiem was first performed on October 13, 1985 at Lovers' Lane United Methodist Church, Dallas , Texas. The performance lasts about 40 minutes.
In his work, Rutter does not adhere to the usual course of the funeral mass as it is laid down in the Catholic liturgy , but rather modifies it by adding psalm texts from the Book of Common Prayer (the liturgical and catechetical book of the Anglican Church) from 1662. Other parts of the funeral mass are omitted.
An important part of the work is the recurring micropolyphonia .
The Sanctus from Rutter's Requiem was chosen for the liturgy of the funeral mass for Helmut Kohl on July 1, 2017 in Speyer Cathedral .
