Reschima Demokratit schel Natzrat ( Arabic القائمة الديموقراطية للناصرة, Hebrew רשימה דמוקרטית של נצרת, lit. Nazareth Democratic List) was a political party in Israel and the only Israeli-Arab party to win seats in the first Knesset . The party was financially supported by the Mifleget Poalei Eretz Israel (Mapai) party and was named after Nazareth because that was the place with most of the Arabs in Israel.
history
In the Mifleget Poalei Eretz Israel party, concerns were raised about the underrepresentation of Arab Israelis in political decision-making and participation in political life in the new state of Israel, as the Mifleget Poalei Eretz Israel found itself unattractive to Arabs in terms of its history and ideology. In addition, Arabs could not become members of the Mifleget Poalei Eretz Israel, based on the contradiction between “loyal Arabs” and “ Zionist party ”. The party experts on Arab affairs were now looking for ways to resolve this contradiction. So they came up with the idea of setting up their own list for the participation in the political process of the Arab population, which could successfully participate in upcoming elections with financial and material support from the party apparatus of Mifleget Poalei Eretz Israel. The Mifleget Poalei Eretz Israel thus secured a corresponding influence on the newly formed party. As a result of this idea, the Reschima Demokratit schel Natzrat was founded.
In the first election in Israel after the declaration of independence on January 25, 1949, the Reschima Demokratit schel Natzrat participated successfully. She received 1.7% of the vote and thus two seats in the First Knesset , which were held by Seif el-Din el-Zoubi and party leader Amin-Salim Jarjora . Reschima Demokratit schel Natzrat supported the government coalition formed on March 8, 1949 under David Ben-Gurion . This government failed due to differing views on religious education and the dissolution of the Ministry of Rationing and Supply and the intended appointment of an entrepreneur as Minister of Trade and Industry, and so the United Religious Front left the ruling coalition. After the different views had been clarified, the second government was formed on November 1, 1950, under the leadership of David Ben-Gurion.
The Reschima Demokratit schel Natzrat party did not take part in the 1951 parliamentary elections because Seif el-Din el-Zoubi had been elected to the Democratic List of Israeli Arabs . Amin-Salim Jarjora did not return to the Knesset, but became mayor of Nazareth in 1954 and held the office until el-Zoubi took office in 1959.
