Reshma Chhiba

Reshma Chhiba (* 1983 in Johannesburg , South Africa ) is a South African visual artist .

Life

Chhiba completed an education at the Witwatersrand University ("Wits University") in Johannesburg, where she received a bachelor's degree in fine arts in 2005 . In 2013 she completed her studies with a “ Master of Arts in Fine Art” (MAFA). She was supervised by Karel Nel from Wits University.

In 2003 she received the Martienssen Prize awarded by the university .

In 2007 she was selected by the Goethe-Institut to act as an art educator at documenta 12 in Kassel.

The artist took part in several group exhibitions in the field of photography and media art . Her first solo exhibition, which she named after the Indian goddess Kali , took place in 2008. In August 2013, an installation entitled The Two Talking Yonis (German: “The two speaking Yonis ”) attracted attention. A giant walk-in vagina evoked very different reactions.

In 2010 she co-founded a dance school for Bharata Natyam in Johannesburg. She has had a diploma for this Indian dance style since 2001.

Chhiba is currently (2013) employed at the Johannesburg Art Gallery , founded in 1915 .
