Residual (weathering)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In geology , residuum (plural residues, lat. “ What remains ”) denotes substances that remain in a soil horizon when there is high humidity , while other substances are carried away into deeper layers.

example

In tropical soils , for example, the poorly soluble iron and aluminum compounds remain in the topsoil , while readily soluble salts , for example sodium , calcium , magnesium or potassium salts , are shifted to deeper soil horizons due to the high levels of precipitation .
