The Resolution 550 of the UN Security Council on May 11, 1984 deals with the situation in Cyprus .

On November 15, 1983, the Turkish Cypriot politician Rauf Denktaş proclaimed the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the north of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, which had been militarily occupied by the Turkish armed forces since July 20, 1974 in Operation Attila . Three days later, on 18 November 1983, which had the Security Council of the United Nations condemned the proclamation and the spin-off and demanded their withdrawal.

On May 11, 1984, the Security Council again dealt with the political situation in Cyprus and, during its 2539th session, passed the following resolution with 13 votes in favor, one against ( Pakistan ) and 1 abstention ( United States of America ) :

Resolution text

The Security Council,

  • after examining the situation in Cyprus at the request of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus ,
  • after hearing the statements by the President of the Republic of Cyprus,
  • Taking note of the Secretary General's report,
  • Recalling its resolutions 365 (1974), 367 (1975), 541 (1983) and 544 (1983),
  • deeply regretful that its resolutions were not implemented, particularly resolution 541 (1983),
  • deeply concerned about further secessionist acts in the occupied part of the Republic of Cyprus in violation of resolution 541 (1983), namely the alleged exchange of ambassadors between Turkey and the legally invalid "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" and the contemplated "referendum on the constitution" "And the" elections ", as well as other acts or threats to act with the aim of consolidating the alleged independent state and deepening the division of Cyprus,
  • Deeply concerned about the recent threats of the settlement of Varosha by persons other than its residents,
  • Reaffirming its continued support for the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus ,
  1. underlines its resolution 541 (1983) and calls for its urgent and sustainable implementation,
  2. Condemns all secessionist acts, including the alleged exchange of ambassadors between Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leadership, declares them illegal and invalid and demands their immediate withdrawal,
  3. repeats its appeal to all states not to recognize the so-called "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" established by secessionist acts and appeals to them not to grant the secessionist entity any relief or to support it,
  4. calls on all states to respect the sovereignty , independence, territorial integrity and non-alignment of the Republic of Cyprus,
  5. considers attempts to settle in Varosha other people than its residents as unacceptable and calls for this area to be transferred to the administration of the United Nations,
  6. regards any attempt to interfere with the status or deployment of the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus as a violation of United Nations resolutions,
  7. Requests the Secretary-General to press ahead with the urgent implementation of Security Council Resolution 541 (1983),
  8. Confirms the mandate given to the UN Secretary-General and asks him to make new attempts at a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem, in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter and the provisions for such a solution as set out in the relevant UN resolutions, including Resolution 541 (1983) and this resolution,
  9. calls on all parties to cooperate with the Secretary General in his efforts to
  10. Resolves to remain concerned with the situation, with the option to take urgent and appropriate action in the event of non-implementation of resolution 541 (1983) and this resolution,
  11. Requests the Secretary-General to press ahead with the implementation of this resolution and to report on it to the Security Council if developments so require.
