The Resolution 541 of the UN Security Council of 18 November 1983 is concerned with the situation in Cyprus .

On November 15, 1983, the Turkish Cypriot politician Rauf Denktaş proclaimed the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the north of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, which had been militarily occupied by the Turkish armed forces since July 20, 1974 in Operation Atilla , after Greek putschists wanted to enforce the annexation of Cyprus to Greece . Three days later, on 18 November 1983, the concerned Security Council of the United Nations with the political situation in Cyprus and adopted during this session of its 2500 by 13 votes, one vote against ( Pakistan ) and 1 abstention ( Jordan ), the following resolution :

Resolution text

The Security Council,

  1. Regrets the statement by the Turkish Cypriot authorities regarding the alleged secession of part of the Republic of Cyprus,
  2. considers the above declaration to be legally invalid and requests its withdrawal,
  3. calls for urgent and effective implementation of its resolutions 365 (1974) and 367 (1975),
  4. Requests the Secretary-General to continue in his efforts so that progress can be made as soon as possible towards a just and lasting solution in Cyprus,
  5. calls on the parties concerned to cooperate with the Secretary-General in his efforts to
  6. calls on all states to respect the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and non-alignment of the Republic of Cyprus,
  7. calls on all states not to recognize any other Cypriot state than the Republic of Cyprus,
  8. calls on all states and the two ethnic groups to refrain from any action that could exacerbate the situation,
  9. Requests the Secretary-General to keep the Security Council informed.
