The Sportforum restaurant was a restaurant in the five-story administration and reception building of the Leipzig Central Stadium (“Stadium of the Hundred Thousands”). The restaurant was located in the middle of the historically imposing house, which was opened in 1956 .

Furnishing

The restaurant on the first floor had a guest room, a hall with a foyer and cloakroom. The premises of the catering business were designed in the style of post-war modernism and functionally designed for an event business. Characteristic for this were the mushroom pillars, which stood in the optical focus of the room.

use

The Sportforum restaurant was responsible for the stadium supply, for the catering in the VIP box and press area for events in the swimming stadium and for the daily restaurant operations. For international football matches with 100,000 and more visitors, field kitchens and drinks stalls were also installed on the top of the dam. On May 9, 1971 for the sold-out EM qualifier GDR - Yugoslavia with an official audience of 000000000100000.0000000000100,000, u. a. 40,000 sausages sold to visitors.

On the occasion of the first GDR-USA swim team on September 3rd and 4th, 1971 in the Leipzig swimming stadium, 7000 guests visited the sports forum. The restaurant team led by Thomas Schaufuss provided a culinary GDR premiere with the presentation of different variations of the American fast food “Hamburger” for the USA athletes around Mark Spitz . Later the “ Grilletta ” was integrated into East German food culture as a replacement for the “Hamburger” until the political change.

On weekdays, the restaurant supplied a school with 300 servings of lunches. Furthermore, the central ice cream production for the state catering organization Leipzig was located in the main building.
