Retable of James the Elder in Solre-le-Château

The reredos of James the Elder in the Catholic parish church of St-Pierre-St-Paul in Solre-le-Château , a French commune in the Nord department in the Hauts-de-France region , was created in 1680. In 1922 the altarpiece was classified as a monument historique .

The retable in the St. James' Chapel is made of marble , stucco and wood. In the middle, a painting with James the Elder as a pilgrim is framed by two pairs of columns. Above it, in a niche, stands the sculpture of James the Elder, which is framed by two angels on a blown gable and crowned by an angel's head.

The following inscription is placed in a cartridge under the painting :

"CETTE TABLE D'AUTEL FUT FAITE L'AN 1680 A L'HONNEUR DE ST JACQUES PAR LA PIETE DE JACQUES DURTESTE ET D'ANNE DE BEHAIGNE SA FEME DONT LES CORPS REPOSENT DANS CETTE CHAPELLE"

(This altarpiece was donated by Jacques Durteste and his wife Anne de Behaigne, whose bodies rest in this chapel, in 1680 in honor of St. James out of piety).
