Rescue Medal (Saxony)

Medal from 1838

The rescue medal was donated on May 18, 1831 by King Anton of Saxony and his co-regent Friedrich August of Saxony and was intended to reward people who had saved another person at their own risk.

The rescue medal was awarded in three stages depending on the severity of the circumstances of the assistance:

Appearance

The first version of the round medal shows the half- portraits of the donors, turned to the right and slightly offset, with the inscription ANTON KOENIG VON SACHSEN AND FRIEDRICH AUGUST MITREGENT VON SACHSEN . In the later explanations, the right-facing bust of the ruling monarch can be seen with the corresponding inscription. In the reverse the three-line inscription FOR LIFE RESCUE, enclosed by a thick wreath of oak leaves .

Carrying method

The award was worn on a white ribbon on the left side of the chest.

Others

The Kingdom of Saxony was the first German state to donate a portable life-saving medal.
