The Embalse nuclear power plant ( Spanish Central Nuclear Embalse , CNE ) in the province of Córdoba (Argentina) is located on the southern bank of a reservoir on the Río Tercero , near the city of Embalse 110 km southwest of the provincial capital Córdoba . It has been in operation since 1984 and consists of a CANDU 6 reactor . Nucleoelectrica Argentina SA is the owner and operator

Construction and operation

Construction of the Embalse nuclear power plant began in April 1974. The reactor went critical for the first time on March 13, 1983, was first synchronized with the power grid on April 25, 1983, and went into commercial operation on January 20, 1984. The operator Nucleoelectrica Argentina SA plans to renovate the nuclear power plant and thus extend the operating life until after 2030. Preparations for this renovation have already started.

Reactor / power

It consists of a type 6 CANDU reactor with a net electrical output of 600  MW and a gross output of 648 MW. It works with natural uranium (0.72% U 235 share), has a thermal output of 2,109 MWth and is the weaker of two nuclear power plants in Argentina, which provides around 4.5% of Argentina's electrical energy requirements. The other is the Atucha Nuclear Power Plant ( Buenos Aires Province ). The plant was built by an Italian-Canadian consortium consisting of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) and Italimpianti.

Accident

On June 30, 1983, a serious incident occurred in the nuclear power plant (overheating of the cooling circuit), which, however, could be brought under control by employees. In 1986 there was another incident when heavy water came out of the power plant. Both incidents were kept secret by those responsible for a long time, only the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was informed. It was only through research that the media managed to bring the incident to the public. Up to 2007 there had been a total of ten incidents.

On March 13, 2013, 40 Greenpeace activists broke into the nuclear power plant and called for the end of the use of nuclear energy in Argentina.
