Reuben Chitandika Kamanga (born August 26, 1929 in Chitandika , Chipata , Eastern Province , † September 20, 1996 ) was a Zambian politician of the United National Independence Party (UNIP).

Life

During the struggle for Zambia's independence, Kimanga was initially a member of the Northern Rhodesian African National Congress (NRANC) before he co-founded the Zambian African National Congress (ZANC), which only existed for a few months, in 1958 . As such, he was imprisoned several times between 1959 and 1960 before he lived in exile in Cairo from 1960 to 1962 . He then returned to Zambia, where he served in the pre-independence government as Minister of Labor and Mines, and Transport and Communications. He was also Vice President of the United National Independence Party (UNIP).

After Zambia gained independence on October 24, 1964, he became Vice President and thus representative of President Kenneth Kaunda . He held this office until 1967 and was also the leader of UNIP in the National Assembly. In 1967 his wife Edina Kamanga sparked a scandal because of her public behavior. After losing to his party rival and previous General Secretary of the party, Simon Kapwepwe, in the election as Vice President of UNIP in 1967 , he also lost the office of Vice President Zambia as part of a government reshuffle and instead became Foreign Minister.

With a further reshuffle of the cabinet, he became Minister for Rural Development in 1968. He was also a member of the Central Committee of UNIP, in which he was also responsible for rural development from 1983. In a television interview in 1985 he reported on his experiences during the struggle for independence and the founding of NRANC, ZANC and UNIP.

In 1991 Kamanga withdrew from political life.
