Reuven Feuerstein (born August 21, 1921 in Botoșani , Romania , † April 29, 2014 in Israel ) was an Israeli psychologist . He was the founder and director of the International Center for the Improvement of Learning Potential (ICELP) in Jerusalem . His theories have been used in elementary schools in more than 80 countries for decades. The ICELP (International Center for the Enhancement of Learning Potential) is currently (as of 2019) Reuven Feuerstein's eldest son Raphael S. Feuerstein (Rabbi Rafi) as President.

Reuven Feuerstein was one of nine siblings and began studying psychology in Bucharest , but was unable to complete it there. The invasion by the National Socialists caused him to flee Romania in 1944. In 1945 he arrived in Palestine . There he looked after refugee children until 1948. He studied clinical and general psychology at the University of Geneva - one of his teachers was Jean Piaget . In 1970 he received his doctorate with a thesis on developmental psychology at the Sorbonne in France .

Awards

In 1992, Feuerstein was awarded the Israel Prize for his services in the social sciences . He also received two honorary doctorates.
