The Revolutionary People's Army ( Spanish Ejército Revolucionario del Pueblo , ERP ) was the Marxist -oriented, armed arm of the Revolutionary Workers' Party of Argentina ( Partido Revolucionario de los Trabajadores , PRT ) under Mario Roberto Santucho ; it was founded during the 1970s .

history

The founding act as the military arm of the PRT took place in the city of San Nicolás de los Arroyos at the 5th Congress of the Revolutionary Workers' Party in June 1970 on the initiative of Mario Roberto Santucho after all parties had been banned by the military government . The ERP was created as a guerrilla that had the height of its activities between 1970 and 1973 and was directed against the military government of Juan Carlos Onganías as well as against the capitalist system. Under the military dictatorship that followed from 1976 , the group was fought against and largely destroyed by the state using illegal, state-terrorist methods, as were the similarly oriented Montoneros . Up to 30,000 Argentines fell victim to this self-declared dirty war of the military, see Desaparecidos .

In 1980 members of the ERP were involved in the assassination attempt on the former Nicaraguan dictator , Anastasio Somoza Debayle , in Paraguay . One of them, Hugo Alfredo Irurzún ("Capitán Santiago"), was then killed by the Paraguayan police.
