Rezső Manninger

Rezső Manninger (born July 7, 1890 in Sopron , † February 4, 1970 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian professor of veterinary medicine.

Life

Manninger grew up in Sopron, where a plaque on the house where he was born has been commemorating him since 1982. He attended the Dániel Berzsenyi Evangelical High School in Sopron until 1908 and then studied at the Veterinary University in Budapest until 1912. In 1914 he received his doctorate. He conducted research at Ferenc Hutÿra's institute for animal diseases and from 1916 onwards he performed various teaching tasks until he succeeded Hutÿra as chair of microbiology and infectious diseases in domestic animals in 1927.

From 1928 to 1943, Manninger headed the national veterinary institute Országos Állategészségügyi Intézet, which he founded and which still exists today - since 2007 under the name Állat-egészségügyi Diagnosztikai Igazgatóság - and honored him with a plaque in 1980. From 1933 to 1963 Manninger represented Hungary in the World Organization for Animal Health . From 1940 to 1941 he was dean and from 1947 to 1948 rector of the Agricultural University. In 1963 he retired.

From 1927 Manniger was a corresponding and from 1939 a full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences . From 1953 to 1956 he headed its agricultural science department, from 1960 to 1967 he was vice-president of the academy. In 1965 the academy awarded him its gold medal.

From 1955 to 1967 Manninger was President of the Hungarian Society for Microbiology, which has awarded the Rezső Manninger Medal named after him since 1974. From 1961 to 1967 he was also President of the Hungarian Veterinary Society.

In 1950 and 1961 he was awarded the Kossuth Prize , the highest Hungarian state prize.

Rezső Manninger spoke German, English and French; in German he also had the first name Rudolf. Of his numerous publications in German, the volumes Infectious Diseases and Organ Diseases should be emphasized, which were published in several editions by Gustav Fischer in the series Special Pathology and Therapy of Pets .

Manninger's ashes were buried in the Farkasréti Cemetery in Budapest in 1970 . For his 100th birthday in 1990, a bronze bust created by Kristóf Kelemen was placed in front of the Veterinary College in Budapest's VII. District , which is now a faculty of the Szent István University .
