Rhabanus Maurus Haacke OSB (born May 21, 1912 in Meppen as Walter Haacke , † June 28, 1993 in Siegburg ) was a German Benedictine and church historian .

Life

Walter Haacke, vicar of the St. Marien parish in Hamburg-St. Georg , was arrested by the Gestapo in Meppen on August 9, 1944 , because he had spoken in a religious class on the day after the assassination attempt on Hitler on July 20, 1944 about the right to murder a tyrant. The choirmaster of St. Marien and other parishioners were also arrested. Haacke was in the Gestapo prison in Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel until March 7, and from then until May 19, 1945 in protective custody in the remand prison in Hamburg . The Gestapo's indictment was: preparation for high treason, favoring the enemy, undermining the military . (Causa Dr. Haacke and others , file number OR b. V. 6j 201/44) Judgment of the People's Court of April 6, 1945: 10 years in prison. He was released from prison on May 19, 1945 by the Allied Military Commission.

Wilhelm Berning appointed him vicar at the Elisabeth Chapel (Osnabrück, Lotter Str.). The following year he left the service of the Diocese of Osnabrück . He asked for admission to the Benedictine Abbey of St. Michael (Siegburg) . In 1947 he took his first vows . His religious name became Pater Rhabanus Maurus . The example of his uncle Abbot Ildefons Schulte Strathaus OSB (1887–1971), who held this office there from 1935–1967 , had probably contributed to joining the order .

He developed an extensive pastoral and scientific activity here. He took care of the prisoners in Siegburg prison , gave religious instruction at the Anno-Gymnasium and was prefect at the St. Maurus boarding school on Michaelsberg . He made particular efforts to the works of the theologian Rupert von Deutz (1070–1130). He researched his works and manuscripts in the most important libraries in Europe in order to publish them in several volumes. His services to the order were honored in 1980 when he was accepted into the Bavarian Benedictine Academy.

He is remembered by the image of St. Judas Thaddäus on one of the pillars of St. Mary's Cathedral in Hamburg . He was a member of the KDB Winfridia zu Bonn in the RKDB .
