from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ildefons Schulte Strathaus OSB (born May 6, 1887 in Bövinghausen (Castrop-Rauxel) as Ewald Anton Schulte Strathaus ; † May 23, 1971 in Siegburg ) was a German Benedictine monk and first abbot of the re-established Benedictine Abbey Michaelsberg and 47th of the Siegburg abbot series.

Life

Ewald Anton Schulte Strathaus made his profession on April 24, 1905 in the Benedictine Abbey in Merkelbeek and took the religious name Ildefons. He studied philosophy in Merkelbeek and Catholic theology in Rome . Shortly after his ordination in 1912, he was promoted to Dr. theol. PhD.

In 1919 he came to the Michaelsberg Monastery, which became an abbey in 1935. On April 15, 1935, he was elected by the convent to be the first abbot of the re-established St. Michael Abbey. On May 16, 1935, Benedikt van Schepdael OSB, Abbot of Affligem , introduced him to the office; the abbot's benediction followed on June 2, 1935 by Karl Joseph Cardinal Schulte , Archbishop of Cologne.

The main challenge was the reconstruction of the abbey buildings that had been destroyed in the war. He was also dubbed the “construction abbot”. On May 8, 1967, shortly after his 80th birthday, Ildefons Schulte Strathaus resigned from office for reasons of age.
