Rhacognathus punctatus is a bug from the family of stink bugs (Pentatomidae).

features

The bugs become 7.5 to 9.5 millimeters long. They have a pale orange to reddish basic color and have a metallic bronze-brown pattern. The legs are pale to orange-red and usually have a pale midline on the pronotum .

distribution and habitat

The species is distributed throughout Europe, east to Siberia. It occurs everywhere in Germany, but is more common in the north than in the south, where it can occur locally in some years. It occurs sporadically in Austria and has not been proven in all federal states. It is widespread in the UK, but occurs only in small numbers locally. More humid habitats are settled, such as moors, river banks or wet meadows, and less often drier habitats.

Way of life

One finds the animals especially on dwarf shrubs and low shrubs such as heathers ( Erica ), heather ( Calluna ), blueberries ( Vaccinium ) and willow ( Salix ). They feed predatory on beetle larvae, such as leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae) or weevils (Curculionidae). If the heather leaf beetle ( Lochmaea suturalis ) occurs in masses in Calluna heaths in northwest Germany , Rhacognathus punctatus can also be found in large numbers. The overwintering takes place as an imago in loose soil litter or moss, such as peat moss ( Sphagnum ). The adults then appear in March or April, and mating and oviposition take place mainly from mid-April to mid-May. The females lay their eggs on the top shoots of the food plants. The nymphs can be observed from June to autumn; The adult animals of the new generation appear from the end of July or August.
