Rhaune Laslett (born April 15, 1919 in London , † April 28, 2002 ) was an English activist. She is considered to be the founder of the Notting Hill Carnival .

The daughter of Native American parents was born in the East End of London . She was a nurse and social worker. As an activist, she campaigned for the interests of the multicultural population in the then problematic district of Notting Hill .

In 1966 she organized the first “Notting Hill Fayre” as part of the London Free School , which she helped to establish. The festival with a Caribbean carnival parade developed over the years from a small, local event to a mass spectacle that is still held today under the name Notting Hill Carnival .

Rhaune Laslett died in 2002 of complications from multiple sclerosis .

In 2011 a plaque in honor of Rhaune Laslett-O'Brian was placed on the corner of Tavistock Square and Portobello Road. At the same point Claudia Jones (1915–1964) is remembered, who had already organized a Caribbean carnival in 1959, which took place annually until her death. Rhaune Laslett is said not to have known anything about this festival.
