The Rhine overhead line crossing Voerde is an overhead line crossing of the Rhine near Voerde on the Lower Rhine . It was built in 1926 and crosses the Rhine with a span of 526 meters.

history

In 1925, RWE initiated the construction of a two-circuit 220 kV line starting from Brauweiler , where the main switchboard of the RWE network is located, via Osterath , Moers , Wesel to Ibbenbüren , in order to feed in and distribute the energy from the hard coal-fired power station there to build a 220 kV ring. The overhead line crossing at Voerde was completed in 1926.

The two masts are designed for six conductors in three levels that can carry two 220 kV circuits. At the time of construction, they were 138 meters high, weighed 172 tons each, and were among the tallest overhead line masts in the world. Its enormous height is due to the fact that large sailing ships occasionally sailed on the Rhine in the 1920s.

Current condition

The high-voltage line Wesel-Moers , to which the overhead line crossing belongs, is still in operation, whereby the high and extra - high voltage cables made of aluminum and steel with their nominal voltage of 110 and 220 kV respectively offer a maximum power transmission  of 130 and 365 megawatts. One support mast is on the right north bank of the river in the Voerder district of Götterswickerhamm ( 51 ° 34 ′ 47 ″  N , 6 ° 39 ′ 26 ″  E ), the other on the opposite southern bank of the Rhine in the foreland in the Orsoyer Rheinbogen ( 51 ° 34 ′ 32 ″  N , 6 ° 39 ′ 22 "  E coordinates: 51 ° 34 ′ 32"  N , 6 ° 39 ′ 22 "  E ). Until 2015, they were still at their original height of 138 meters, making them the tallest overhead line masts in North Rhine-Westphalia. As part of the renovation of the now almost 90-year-old line from mid-July to the end of August 2015, in addition to the complete replacement of the conductor cables, the masts were also shortened by around 42 meters, making them only 96 meters high.

The long-term plan is to rebuild the 220 kV line for operation with 380 kV and to replace the old masts with 95 meter high new constructions. This project was originally planned in 2012, but has not yet started due to lengthy investigations into bird protection and disputes about the route. At the beginning of 2015, Amprion suspended the plans until further notice.
